Central locking help

    2014/15 Renault Trafic 1.6dci

    Looking for some help on central locking:

    Had to replace both front door latches as the nipple on the cables snapped off -yes both of them within a month of each other.

    Second hand latches fitted but now the doors will not unlock and lock properly. I cant open either door from outside.

    What am I missing?

    Do I need to reset software?

    Could it be the battery system management thingummy?

    I can't seem to find out any information about it or anyone that knows anything about it!

    I would not suspect the battery management system or a software reset as the first thing.

    Given that the problem appeared immediately after replacing both front door latches, I would first concentrate on the replacement locks and the mechanical Bowden cables.

    On the Trafic III (X82), the central locking motor is part of the door latch assembly, but the outside door handle operates the latch mechanically via a Bowden cable.

    The first thing I would check

    Remove the door trim again and check the Bowden cable from the outside handle to the latch:

    • Is the cable nipple properly seated in the latch lever?
    • Is the outer cable sheath fully clipped into its retaining bracket?
    • Is the cable routed correctly and not kinked?
    • Does the latch lever move through its full range when the outside handle is pulled?
    • Does the latch actually release when the lever is moved manually?

    This is particularly important because you mentioned that the original problem was the cable nipple breaking off. If the replacement cable is not seated correctly, the outside handle can move normally but simply doesn't move the latch far enough to release the door.

    A very useful test

    With the door open, operate the central locking with the remote and watch/listen to the latch.

    Does the locking motor actually operate?

    Then try the inside handle and outside handle separately.

    The results can tell you quite a lot:

    I wouldn't reset anything yet

    A software reset or disconnecting the battery shouldn't be necessary just because the front door latches have been replaced.

    If the problem started immediately after fitting the second-hand latches, I would first verify the mechanical installation and the electrical connectors.

    The battery management system would be quite low on my list of suspects for this particular symptom.

    One other thing worth checking is the part numbers of the two replacement latches. The left and right front latches are different, and the Trafic III shares components with the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro B and Nissan NV300, so it's worth making absolutely sure you have the correct versions.

    If you can tell us:

    1. Can you open both front doors from the inside?
    2. Do you hear the locking motors operating when you press the remote?
    3. Do the interior locking buttons/knobs move?
    4. What are the part numbers on the two replacement latches?

    we should be able to narrow this down quite quickly.
